Why Substantial Content Sets You Apart

Written by Colleen McKenna | May 30, 2025 4:15:00 AM

“What is all this noise?”

Ever feel that way scrolling LinkedIn?

I do. And so does most of my network.

The feed can be exhausting, a blur of updates and low-value activity. For some, it's overwhelming; for others, it's irritating. And for many, it creates quiet pressure to post something.

But posting to post? That's bad advice.

We always recommend you show up on LinkedIn, but with intention. In a feed full of noise, you need to cut through it. You do that with value. And value, in a business context, usually means more than updates or some pictures of an event or happy hour.

The pressure to post can be loud. But without a purpose, we contribute to the noise.

Ask yourself:

Is it worth your audience’s time, or just more noise?

A quick barometer: are you proud of what you are posting or are you thinking I got my post up for this week let’s get on to the next thing?

You know the difference. Content resonates when someone shares something valuable—a lesson, a challenge, a how-to, a shift in thinking. People pause, engage, and share, and they remember it.

That’s how trust is built, not by frequency, but by saying something that matters.

Insightful content isn’t just seen. It’s saved. Revisited. Talked about. Acted on.

Want to Share Something That Stands Out? Start Here.

Here’s a simple framework to move your content from filler to foundational. This is adapted from our earlier blog, Creating High-Performing LinkedIn Posts.

1. Start With Clarity

Before you write a word, ask:

  • Why am I posting?
  • Who is this for?
  • What do I want them to take away?

If you don’t know the intent, your audience won’t either.

2. Share From Experience

Generic advice falls flat. Real experience connects. Lean into:

  • Lessons learned
  • Mistakes made
  • Wins that taught you something

This is where trust begins—through honesty, not polish.

3. Make It Meaningful

Every strong post includes at least one of these five elements:

  • Reflection – Share an insight others can relate to
  • Motivation – Inspire through challenge or growth
  • Teaching – Offer something practical or helpful
  • Emotion – Make your audience feel something
  • Storytelling – Tie it all together with a clear, human example

If it doesn’t connect, it won’t convert.

4. Stay Aligned

Every post is a brand touchpoint. Check for alignment:

  • Does this reinforce what I want to be known for?
  • Is it part of a broader theme I want to build around?

Your feed should tell a clear, consistent story over time.

5. Invite Real Engagement

The goal isn’t just to inform—it’s to involve. Try:

  • Asking a thoughtful question
  • Sharing a reflection that prompts others
  • Encouraging people to add their take

You’re not broadcasting. You’re building a dialogue.

6. Pause Before You Post

Before you hit publish, do a final check:

  • Would I stop scrolling for this?
  • Does it challenge, inspire, teach, or connect?
  • Does it sound like me?

If it’s not useful or true to you, hold back. Silence can be more strategic than noise.

You don’t need a set cadence. You don’t need to post three times a week. You don’t need to be loud.

You need to be intentional.

High-value content, whether a single post, a comment, or something you send to a prospect, goes further than just adding to the feed. You can remix and reuse. Let generative AI help you ideate, create, and repurpose. But the insight should start with you.

Show up when you have something to say. Then say it well.

Because yes, consistency matters. But substance builds credibility.
