LinkedIn has been pretty slow to embrace hashtags, but that’s changing. Hashtags help curate content, develop and rally a community and amplify messages.

Hashtags can be distracting and disruptive, but they are everywhere. My children in the course of a conversation whether light-hearted or serious will drop a “hashtag <insert topic>.” This pop reference tends to make everyone pause and laugh. Who would have ever said anything like that five or ten years ago?

Recently Linkedin announced that hashtags would be available for English speaking members using their LinkedIn iOS or Android apps, but we now see it on the LinkedIn’s desktop version, so they have moved beyond their initial release. It will roll out to all members on all platforms.

Add a hashtag to your post and it will be automatically available publically. If you prefer it only goes to your connections, you can adjust your Privacy Settings. In the end, more people may find your posts and original content. If you are working to build a larger presence on LinkedIn, this will be helpful to you.

Consider hashtagging your industry, your mission, topics etc.

You can also search hashtags to find posts, people, and companies related to that hashtag. If you are looking for influencers, experts, prospects and clients you can quickly see who is talking and using LinkedIn more effectively than others. Let’s give it a whirl.

Add a # and word (no spaces) into the search bar and you will see all sorts of results. So click on the dropdown and choose Posts. You can even choose People, Companies, Groups and you will receive results based on that hashtag.
